In 2011, Madurai had population of 3,038,252 of which male and female were 1,526,475 and 1,511,777 respectively. In 2001 census, Madurai had a population of 2,578,201 of which males were 1,303,363 and remaining 1,274,838 were females. Madurai District population constituted 4.21 percent of total Maharashtra population. In 2001 census, this figure for Madurai District was at 4.13 percent of Maharashtra population.
There was change of 17.84 percent in the population compared to population as per 2001. In the previous census of India 2001, Madurai District recorded increase of 7.41 percent to its population compared to 1991.
